The building will be located in an industrial warehouse of more than 5,000 square meters, which has been rehabilitated

The School of Audiovisual Media of Barcelona (EMAV) finishes the transfer to the grounds of Can Batlló. The building will open doors this September to start the new course in the new facilities. The first students will premiere the building on September 18, when the classes will be resumed. In total, they can use 5,460 square meters located in an old industrial warehouse, which have been rehabilitated to accommodate this new educational use. The City Council has invested 12,900,000 euros.

The EMAV is a public building of reference in audiovisual training with 49 years of history. So far, it was located on Via Laietana, but facilities have long been left small. The new facility, with more than 5,000 square meters, has a capacity for 600 students, among those of training cycles and those that participate in specific activities that are organized. In fact, according to the council, the intention is that during the next course, other contents will be started as study and workspaces, activities with alumni or specialization courses.

In addition, the new building, located in block number 7 of the industrial historical complex, has an auditorium with capacity for 288 people. Apart from the students, they can also be used by the entities of the district and the Sants-Montjuïc district.

Historical claims

The new educational building converges two historical demands. The first one, that of the EMAV, which had been provisionally installed at the facilities of Via Laietana in the year 72, had yet to seek a definitive location. In addition, the 2,000-square-meter building they rented was small and outdated at the technological level. For this reason, the transfer to Can Batlló culminates its aspirations.

On the other hand, neighbours in the Sants-Montjuïc district have asked for more than 45 years to recover the space of the industrial complex. They want the buildings to be rehabilitated and converted into municipal facilities. There are still many blocks from the old factory to recover, but number 7 is the first success of neighbourhood associations. They hope EMAV is the first of many projects in Can Batlló. As the historical archive, which is also expected to be installed as of 2022.

The EMAV returns to Sants-Montjuïc

About 50 years ago, some teachers were installed in the basement of the Peruvian school, in Can Maiol, located in Sants-Montjuïc. From there, they gave photography and film courses. At the beginning of the 70, the School of Audiovisual Media was founded officially, a municipal center that was the pioneer in this branch throughout the State. After going through different venues, he settled on the Laietana road, in the year 93, although he had to be provisional.

A year later the Betevé studies were also installed, with whom they shared space for a decade. Although in 2005, Barcelona television went to the current facilities of Poblenou, the Laietana facility was small for the Audiovisual School and sought a final headquarters. Among the possible sites, there was the 22 @, which was finally ruled out. With the disembarkation of the EMAV in Can Batlló, the school returns to the starting place: in the district of Sants-Montjuïc.
